Safe Handling of Medicines Assessors Course, Level 2

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) requires care providers to have a formal system to assess staff competence. This practical workshop provides the knowledge, materials, and skills for your staff to achieve this. This course will teach your staff how to follow a checklist to evidence your staff competencies. Additionally organisations that have staff trained to this level can extend their direct support staff’s Administration of Medication certificate to be valid for a two-year period.

Course Content

  • Describe legal/best practice requirements for assessing staff competence
  • State what non-competence looks like when medicine are administered
  • Demonstrate the overall process of giving medication
  • Demonstrate how to select and record medicines systematically
  • Practice using simulated blister pack competence assessments
  • Assess someone administering a tablet and capsule
  • Assess someone administering a cream and ointment
  • Assess someone administering an inhaler
  • Assess someone administering an eye drop

Course Assessment

A written exam and practical assessment on each medication form. Upon successful completion the delegate will be awarded a certificate, which is valid for 1 year.
